Becoming Eligible

CFI Course FloridaA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) must go beyond having flying ability to being able to pass that skill to another. Earning this license will require that you demonstrate a superior knowledge and communication ability.

The requirements will include that you:

  • Meet a minimum age of 18 years old
  • Read, write, speak, and comprehend English
  • Hold a valid FAA 3rd Class Medical Certificate
  • Hold a commercial or airline transport pilot certificate with instrument ratings for the aircraft you intend to fly while teaching
  • Pass the required FAA Knowledge Exams
  • Pass the FAA Practical Flight Test and Oral Exam

Your aspirations don’t have to stop with becoming a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). You can go further with a CFII rating, or Certified Flight Instructor Instrument, which allows you to teach instrument rating, or an MEI rating (Multi-Engine Flight Instructor), which allows you to teach flight students in Multi-Engine aircraft.

The Opportunities Gained for a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)

Once you’re a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), you get the opportunity to guide prospective pilots toward their dreams of flying. When you have the appropriate ratings, you can train pilots for an assortment of certificates for up to 8 hours per day.

While you don’t need to become a CFI if your plans don’t include teaching, earning your Certified Flight Instructor rating improves your understanding of the knowledge bases related to flying and the mechanisms of operating aircraft. You’ll also gain hours of practice, which is good for any activity you’re pursing to perfection.
