Private Pilot License (PPL)

Become a Private Pilot

Earning your Private Pilot Certificate is where you develop the foundational skills, judgment and discipline to become a safe, confident and competent pilot. It’s about more than learning to fly an airplane—it’s learning to take ownership, make sound decisions and accept the responsibility that comes with being pilot in command.

At Paragon, we build those habits from the beginning, creating a strong foundation for wherever your aviation journey takes you next.

For almost everyone, the Discovery Flight is the first step to becoming a pilot. This flight is a “mini-lesson” where you will tour the school, learn about becoming a pilot and then actually fly the aircraft with an FAA approved Certified Flight Instructor.

The next step after your Discovery Flight is to meet with our team to review your goals, timeline and any other aspect of your training you wish to discuss. At this time, you will also be given a detailed written cost estimate and assigned a primary flight instructor.

What You’ll Learn

With PPL flight training, you’ll build skills and knowledge through hands-on flight training and ground instruction, including:

  • Aircraft construction and systems: Discover the parts of the aircraft, including the basics of aircraft construction, engines, flight controls and instruments. You’ll also learn aircraft terminology.
  • Navigation and planning: Find out how to navigate using sectional charts and plan longer flights, determining speed, time, distance and fuel burn.
  • Weather: Learn how the weather works and how to use weather reports to determine whether it’s safe to fly.
  • Regulations: Learn the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), including pilot responsibilities, medical requirements and airspace rules.
  • FAA test prep: Our training prepares you for the FAA knowledge test and practical test you need to get your private pilot’s license.

  • Flight maneuvers and aircraft control: Study how aircraft fly and practice flight maneuvers, emergency procedures, checklist use, takeoffs and landings.
  • Solo flight preparation: Gain the skills and confidence you need to fly the aircraft on your own when your instructor determines that you’re ready.
  • Cross-country flying: Plan and fly longer flights, applying navigation techniques, communication and aeronautical decision-making.
  • Scenario practice: Using our flight simulators, you can practice real-world flight scenarios, including emergencies.

Requirements and Eligibility for PPL Training

Most students are closer to qualifying than they think. To begin your path toward a private pilot certificate, you’ll need to:

  • Be at least 17 years old when you’re licensed (you can start your PPL training before age 17).
  • Meet English proficiency requirements.
  • Pass an FAA medical exam.
  • Complete the required ground study, flight time and exam preparation.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident, or have an M1 visa.

You do not need previous flying experience, a college degree or natural talent. You don’t necessarily need perfect vision, either. Many pilots are able to meet FAA medical requirements with glasses or contact lenses. If you’re not sure you qualify or if you’re wondering about what it takes to get your Private Pilot License, Paragon Flight Training can help make it simple and clear.

Micah D.

My name is Micah Doane, I trained through Paragon Flight for nearly all of my training until I became a Paragon Flight Instructor. From day one I could tell that Paragon was a place where I could learn about aviation at the highest level without wasting my time or money. Apart from the incredible instruction I received, I also had a blast learning to fly! I met many great friends along the way whom I still keep in contact with, most of which also fly for airlines or large charter companies now. I found instructing at paragon to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I wouldn’t trade my time at the school for any other job. Training at Paragon taught me the importance of balance and showed me how to operate at an extremely high level and how to have fun while doing it. My time with Paragon fully prepared me for my next steps in an airline career and I will be forever grateful for this flight school and its community.

There are too many memories to list for me since I was there for about 9 years. I will say the biggest memory/experience while working there would be the lifelong friends that we all made. Paragon was just one big family unit and was literally the most fun job to go to everyday, especially since I was working with all of my friends!

When I worked at Paragon we were a small group of just 5 instructors. That really made it feel like a family and we had a lot of fun together sharing our passion for flying with our students. I believe that family vibe as coworkers steered me toward the corporate world of flying. My current job is a continuation of that family environment and we work very hard to fly the most important people of our company safely to their destinations and we have a lot of fun doing it at the same time!

Having been able to spend a lot of time with Paragon while I was there, I was able to form many great friendships with other Instructors, Employees, and Students.  Many of whom we all stay in contact with to this day.  My most memorable experience though by far was having our Wedding Reception in the Hangar surrounded by Friends, Family, and Various Aircraft.
