When Can You Start Training?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sets the age requirements for becoming a private pilot, but high school students can begin earlier than many realize:

• Minimum age to begin flight lessons: No official minimum, though most students start around 15 or 16.
• Minimum age to solo (fly alone): 16 years old.
• Minimum age to receive a PPL: 17 years old.

Your First Step: The Discovery Flight

Your journey at Paragon Flight starts with a Discovery Flight, where you’ll tour the school, meet instructors, and take the controls during a short flight with an FAA-certified instructor.

Afterward, our team will review your goals, schedule, and training options, provide a personalized cost estimate, and introduce you to your primary instructor, who will guide you through the program.

Stage One: Building the Foundation

In Stage One, you’ll complete about 20 to 30 flight hours while learning the fundamentals of flight, from understanding aircraft systems to mastering takeoffs and landings.

Key topics cover:

• Aircraft terminology and components
• Principles of flight and aerodynamics
• Airport operations and airspace classifications
• Radio communication procedures
• Weather and flight planning
• FAA rules and regulations
• Checklist use and safety procedures

This stage concludes with a Stage Check conducted by a check instructor, held just before your first solo flight to confirm your progress, readiness, and confidence to fly independently.

Stage Two: Expanding Skills and Independence

In Stage Two, you’ll spend about 10 to 15 flight hours refining your skills and expanding your abilities, with a focus on landings, navigation, and cross-country flight planning to build confidence in flying independently.

This phase includes two solo cross-country flights and one supervised night cross-country flight, providing real-world experience in navigation and decision-making. Before soloing across long distances, you will complete a second Stage Check to confirm you are fully prepared and safe to fly independently.

Stage Three: Final Preparation and Certification

In Stage Three, you’ll finish any remaining solo flights and prepare for your FAA oral and flight exams. With your instructor’s guidance, you’ll review key skills and procedures to ensure full readiness.

Before testing, you will complete Paragon’s End of Course (EOC) flight, a challenging evaluation that mirrors the FAA exam. Passing the EOC confirms you’re ready to earn your Private Pilot License and begin flying independently. Once you pass the FAA oral and flight exams, you officially become a licensed Private Pilot, capable of flying passengers and continuing your aviation education.
