Commercial Pilot Eligibility & Requirements

Commercial pilots can act as the pilot in command of an aircraft that is carrying passengers or property and get paid for it. Many professional pilots begin their careers by performing sightseeing flights, towing banners, patrolling pipelines, dropping off skydivers, or by becoming Certified Flight Instructors.

Paragon Flight offers two options for obtaining your commercial license – single engine (CSEL) and multi-engine (CMEL). Some clients elect to obtain both, but the route you decide to take is your personal preference.

To be certified by the FAA as a commercial pilot, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Read, speak, write, and understand the English language
  • Hold a valid private pilot license (PPL)
  • Hold a valid 2nd Class Medical Certificate
  • Hold an Instrument Rating (Not required by law, but 95% of employers will require it)
  • Log 250 hours total flight hours
  • Log 100 hours Pilot -In-Command (PIC) training
  • Log 20 hours dual flight time
  • Log 10 hours solo flight time
  • Pass the FAA Written Exam
  • Pass the FAA Oral and Practical Exams
