How do I get a Private Pilot License?

Whether you’re out for a new adventure or want to take the first step in an aviation career, you’re probably wondering, “How do I get a pilot license?” A Private Pilot License (PPL) from Paragon Flight will let you operate a single-engine plane in clear conditions, when Visual Flight Rules apply.

The process of achieving this goal will combine ground training, practical experiences, and evaluations to demonstrate that you’ve learned the principles of flight, the aircraft systems, and the skills needed to fly safely. At Paragon Flight, we welcome you to one of our locations to learn in an environment where you and your goals will determine the type of program provided.

Are You Ready for Training?

Consider the following eligibility requirements for pursuing your PPL:

  • AGE – at least 17 years old (16 for independent flight)
  • LANGUAGE – fluent and literate in English
  • FAA MEDICAL CERTIFICATION – at least a 3rd Class
  • BACKGROUND CHECK – passed

Your choice of flight school will influence your outcome and your experience. Make sure you choose a training source to ensure you enjoy every moment of your training without sacrificing your skills or safety. If you want a looser schedule and structure, consider a

Part 61 program, and if you prefer structure and full-time training, choose a Part 141 flight school. Or, you can go with Paragon Flight: we operate with both authorizations.

PPL Training at Paragon Flight How do I get a Private Pilot License?

Paragon Flight breaks Private Pilot (PPL) training into stages. This process ensures that no skill or concept falls by the wayside before we move on to further development.

STARTING POINT: Discovery Flight

How terrible would it be if you committed to a complete training program only to realize that your aviation idea was drastically different from reality? A Discovery Flight allows Paragon Flight students to take a “mini-lesson” and a flight lesson without a concrete commitment. Following this exposure to our facilities, classes, and instructors, we’ll present a curated plan for you to reach your goals.

STAGE 1: Fundamentals of Flight Training (20–30 Flight Hours)

This is the most comprehensive and foundational phase of your PPL training. Over 20 to 30 flight hours, you’ll learn essential skills and core aviation concepts that set the stage for success. Topics include:

  • Aircraft systems and terminology
  • Principles of flight
  • Airport operations and airspace classifications
  • Radio communication procedures
  • Weather basics
  • FAA regulations and safety protocols
  • Use of checklists and cockpit procedures
  • Basic flight maneuvers, including takeoff and landing

This stage concludes with your first Stage Check, designed to assess progress, reinforce skills, and build the confidence necessary for your first solo flight.

STAGE 2: Advanced/Solo Flight Training (10–15 Flight Hours)
In this phase, your skills become more refined and independent. You’ll focus on:

  • Precision landings
  • Cross-country navigation
  • Solo flight planning and execution
  • Supervised nighttime cross-country flight

You’ll learn to fly confidently across new routes and airspaces. It ends with a second Stage Check to ensure you’re ready for the final steps of your training.

STAGE 3: Examination and Checkride Preparation (10–15 Flight Hours)
The final stage focuses on fulfilling all remaining flight requirements and preparing for your FAA evaluations. You’ll complete:

  • Final solo flights
  • Required cross-country and night flying
  • Review sessions focused on FAA exam content
  • A comprehensive End of Course (EOC) flight evaluation

Upon successful verbal and practical checkride administered by an FAA evaluator, you will receive your PPL.
