How to Obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate (CPL)

Earning a Commercial Pilot Certificate (CPL) is a major milestone for pilots who want to fly professionally. Whether your goal is to instruct, fly charter, conduct aerial surveys, or eventually reach commercial airlines, a CPL is the credential that allows you to start getting compensated for flying. At Paragon Flight Training, commercial pilot training is structured, career-focused, and aligned with FAA standards so students can progress with confidence.

Explore a clear, step-by-step overview of how to obtain a CPL in the United States and how Paragon supports students throughout the process.

Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements

How to Obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate (CPL)

Before beginning commercial pilot training, you must meet several FAA requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Hold a Private Pilot Certificate
  • Obtain at least a Second Class FAA Medical Certificate

These requirements ensure that pilots are medically fit and have the foundational skills needed to progress to advanced training.

Build Required Flight Experience

Flight time is a core component of earning a CPL. Under FAA Part 61, pilots must accumulate a minimum of 250 total flight hours. These hours must include specific experience categories.

Typical requirements include:

  • 100 hours as pilot in command
  • 50 hours of cross-country flight time
  • 20 hours of commercial training with an instructor
  • 10 hours of solo or pilot in command commercial practice flights

Commercial training includes day and night cross-country flights, instrument training, and experience in a complex aircraft or technically advanced aircraft.

For students training under FAA Part 141, the total time requirement may be reduced, often to around 190 hours.

Complete Ground School and Knowledge Test

In addition to flight training, commercial pilots must complete advanced ground instruction. This prepares students for the FAA Commercial Pilot Knowledge Test, which consists of 100 multiple-choice questions with a 2.5-hour time limit. A passing score is 70 percent.

Topics covered include advanced aerodynamics, federal aviation regulations, aircraft performance, weather theory, and commercial flight operations. Paragon integrates ground training with flight lessons so students can immediately apply what they learn in the air.

Train to Commercial Flying Standards

Commercial pilots are held to tighter performance standards and are expected to demonstrate a professional level of precision and judgment.

Training focuses on:

  • Accurate altitude, heading, and airspeed control
  • Advanced maneuvers such as chandelles, lazy eights, and steep spirals
  • Professional decision making and risk management
  • Operating safely while flying for compensation

Paragon emphasizes standardized procedures and consistent evaluation, so students develop habits that translate directly to real-world flying and professional operations.

Pass the Commercial Pilot Practical Test

The final step is the FAA Commercial Pilot Practical Test, commonly called the checkride. This includes an oral exam and a flight portion with a designated examiner.

The oral exam covers regulations, aircraft systems, flight planning, and aerodynamics. The flight portion evaluates commercial maneuvers, emergency procedures, and overall professionalism.

Once you pass the checkride, you earn your Commercial Pilot Certificate and are legally authorized to be paid to fly.
