What are the different types of pilot licenses available?

Are you wondering about the different types of pilot licenses? Each license comes with its own privileges, requirements, and career potential. At Paragon Flight, we guide students through each stage of certification, tailored to their goals, lifestyle, and long-term plans.

Student Pilot Certificate

This is your entry point into aviation. The student pilot certificate allows you to begin flight training and eventually fly solo under the supervision of an instructor.

Key Points:What are the different types of pilot licenses available?

  • No minimum flight hours required to receive the certificate
  • Must be at least 16 years old (14 for gliders)
  • Requires an FAA medical certificate
  • Solo flight privileges only with instructor endorsement
  • Cannot carry passengers

At Paragon Flight, we help students apply for and receive their student certificate early in training, so they can begin flying as soon as they’re ready.

Private Pilot License (PPL)

The most common license for recreational pilots or those starting a professional path, the PPL allows you to fly single-engine aircraft and carry passengers, but not for hire.

Key Points:

  • Minimum of 40 flight hours (average is 60–70)
  • Must be at least 17 years old
  • Pass the FAA written knowledge test and checkride
  • Fly under Visual Flight Rules (VFR)
  • Cannot receive compensation for flying

This license is the foundation for all higher-level certifications. At Paragon Flight, we offer structured training under Part 141 or flexible training under Part 61, depending on your schedule and goals.

Instrument Rating (IFR)

Required for commercial operations and cross-country flying in various weather, the IFR adds the ability to fly in low-visibility conditions using instruments alone.

Key Points:

  • Minimum of 50 hours cross-country PIC time
  • Minimum of 40 hours of instrument training
  • Increases safety and real-world flight capabilities
  • Required for most commercial and airline roles

Paragon students train in both advanced aircraft and FAA-approved simulators to build confidence and proficiency in instrument conditions.

Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

This credential allows you to fly for compensation or hire, making it essential for pilots seeking employment with charter companies, airlines, corporate flight departments, or cargo carriers.

Key Points:

  • Minimum of 250 total flight hours
  • Includes day/night cross-country and complex aircraft experience
  • Requires advanced maneuvers and systems training
  • Must hold at least a Second-Class Medical Certificate

Paragon’s Professional Pilot Program (P3) is designed to help students earn their CPL and prepare for career entry in just 10 months.

Certified Flight Instructor (CFI/CFII/MEI)

Teach others how to fly while building flight hours toward ATP requirements, a common and practical next step after earning your CPL.

Key Points:

  • CFI: Teaches basic flight
  • CFII: Teaches instrument flight
  • MEI: Teaches multi-engine operations
  • Instructors are compensated and gain valuable experience

Many Paragon graduates continue as instructors at our campuses, gaining paid experience while advancing their careers.

Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP)

This is the highest level of pilot certification in the U.S. and is required to act as a captain for scheduled airlines and many corporate operations.

Key Points:

  • Minimum of 1,500 total flight hours
  • Must be at least 23 years old
  • Pass a written exam and a practical checkride
  • Demonstrates expert-level skill and knowledge

Paragon Flight supports students throughout the entire journey with mentorship, structured programs, and career placement support.
