Why Is Flight Training in Florida Better Than Other States?

If you’re thinking about attending flight school, you’ve probably heard that training in some states is better than in others. But why? The environment of the flight school you choose will directly impact your rate of progress, training experience, and preparedness for a career as a professional pilot. In Florida, Paragon Flight Training is proud to serve students at two award-winning training centers, located in Fort Myers and Punta Gorda.

Why Is Flight Training in Florida Better Than Other States?

Our flagship campus in Fort Myers is among the most active training environments in the country. FMY is a regional FAA reliever airport for Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). In other words, you’ll get the experience of a very busy, tower-controlled airport while still being located in a small, student-friendly airport.

FMY offers:

  • Two runways: 6,406 ft and 4,910 ft asphalt with precision approaches.
  • More than 150 airports throughout the region provide accessible cross-country training.
  • A state-of-the-art terminal with full amenities via our Base Operations, one of the top-rated FBOs in North America.

Paragon students at Fort Myers train on a fleet of modern aircraft, including Piper PA28 “Pilot,” Piper PA-44 Seminole, Piper P100i, Cessna 172S Skyhawk, Cirrus SR20/22, and an ALSIM AL172 Flight Simulator.

Punta Gorda Airport (PGD)

Paragon’s satellite campus at Punta Gorda Airport (PGD) Air Center adds another outstanding option for Florida-based training. PGD offers students:

  • Two long, paved runways (7,193 ft and 6,286 ft) with instrument landing systems for safe training in all types of weather.
  • A new state-of-the-art air center, complete with FBO, pilot lounge, meeting space, and more.
  • Less congested airspace than at some of the busier hubs, giving students the best of both worlds between efficient training and real-world flying.

PGD’s prime location on the Gulf Coast of Florida also allows for quick and easy access to Sarasota, Naples, the Florida Keys, and the Bahamas for advanced cross-country flights.

The Florida Advantage

At Paragon’s campuses, students benefit from an average of 360 days of good flying weather a year. That means:

  • More reliable flight training schedules with fewer long weather interruptions
  • Improved proficiency through frequent flying
  • A quicker and less expensive path to earning certifications

Florida also offers Class B, C, and D airports, along with rural options, providing training that closely mirrors real airline environments. With Paragon Flight, both FMY and PGD connect students to the state’s thriving aviation industry, from airlines and corporate operators to charter services.

Compared to locations in the Midwest, Northeast, or Mountain West, where unpredictable weather, limited airport options, or smaller fleets can hinder progress, Florida clearly stands out as the faster and more cost-efficient option.
