Become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
A Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) has specialized training designed to translate knowledge and skills so that others can understand and apply the instruction received. This role is an excellent entry point into the industry, especially if you need to log flight time for future endeavors. Remember that airline pilots require 1,500 hours of accumulated flight time before applying.
The steps to become a Certified Flight Instructor are fairly simple:
- Possess a valid Commercial Pilot License (CSEL/CMEL) or Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification
- Possess the parallel certification to the training that you want to provide – single-engine (CFI), instrument (CFII), or multi-engine (MEI)
- FAA 3rd Class Medical Certification
- 18 years old, minimum
- Literate and fluent in the English language
- Have at least 15 hours logged as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) in the parallel category and class or aircraft as the training sought
- Possess proficiency and an endorsement in stall awareness, spin entry, spins, and spin recovery
- Pass the FAA written exam and oral/practical checkride.
Make a Living While Growing Your Skills
With a flight instructor certification, you can enter the aviation industry and earn a wage while building up to 8 hours per day of flight time. You may not plan to work as a flight instructor for the duration of your career, but as you build to the 1,500 hours you need to apply with an airline, working as a flight instructor will also allow you to perfect your flight skills and reap the fulfillment gained from sharing your passion.
