Make Sure That You Qualify

As part of flight school participation and credential application, you have to demonstrate fitness to fly. Bear in mind that working for an airline makes you the person responsible for hundreds of lives, so tip-top physical condition is essential.

The FAA gives 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class Medical Certificates.

The Pilot in Command (PIC) requires a 1st class, and the Second in Command requires a 2nd class medical certificate.

Qualifications for a 1st Class Medical Certificate:

  • Voice hearing test – must be able to hear conversational tones from a 6-foot distance
  • Vision test – 20/20 vision naturally or through correction
  • In-line with standards of cardiovascular and neurological health
  • No colorblindness

Disqualifying Conditions

  • Angina pectoris
  • Bipolar disease
  • Cardiac valve replacement
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Diabetes mellitus requiring meds
  • Unexplained consciousness disturbance
  • Epilepsy
  • Heart transplant
  • Heart attack
  • Permanent pacemaker
  • Severe personality disorder
  • Psychosis
  • Substance abuse

Three or more DUIs also make a pilot candidate ineligible for a Medical Certificate.
