Info Foreign Student-Pilots Need to Know
International student-pilots must participate in the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). This program is governed by the Department of Homeland Security and restricts flight school training to Part 141 schools.
Current licensed pilots won’t require a visa to transfer licenses, validate licensing, or review flight or instrument proficiency. Visiting pilots may also obtain an aircraft rental without presenting a visa.
Foreign students who wish to participate in a Part 61 program must be a legal permanent resident or have an H-type visa indicating work status. However, these student-pilots will need to receive approval from the TSA before initiating flight training.
The visa required for participation in the program must be an M-1 type student visa. A tourist or business visa will not permit participation in flight training.
To receive the M-1 visa, you’ll need a certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status (Form I-20), which we can issue. You can complete the forms for receiving this document online.
